Red, that was the color of the curls that bounced on the head of the scrawny girl who crawled into the rose gardens, a dirty bunny rabbit made of cloth with plenty of sewed up stitches riding up and down its belly in thick white stitching and a black vest dangling by its ear from her mouth. The black shift gave way to the bruised paleness of her skin. Bare feet dug into the grass and kicked some of it off, though she was careful of disturbing any of the flower beds. Rolling onto her bottom Sam looked around at the red roses in full bloom, the stark emerald of her eyes absorbing the green of the leaves. The flowers were blooming out of season, too alive for it yet to be cold during the nights and sometimes too hot during the days. Opening her mouth and pulling the curtain of unruly red curls out of her face, Sam's mouth popped open and she allowed Bunny to fall into her lap without giving the action much thought.
A hum left her lips as she combed her hair out and then pushed to her feet, the stuffed animal tumbling down the ground like an abandoned toy though its favorite child was still very much present and only arm's length away. Swaying on her feet, arms limp at her sides Sam''s feet shuffled and fell into step to the rhythm playing itself in her head and slipping out her lips. Fingers began to flex and the stuffed animal perked up, his ears drooping over its beaded eyes, staring unblinking up towards its mistress who spun on her heel and continued to hum. Arms splaying as the ruby tied around her neck by the black ribbon began to glow a deep ruby red and wisps of smoke drifted from the ground towards her fingertips and from it came small holes of those that she summoned back from the dead. The humming turned from sound to words, drifting lazily in the late afternoon sun. "Yal-di ha-tov veh ha-rach...Al ti-ra veh al tif-chad."
Bunny twirled and wobbled on his one foot as Sam twirled and the skirts billowed around her, foot stamping and with it the skeletons chattered and the squirrels that had become part of the earth pushed themselves to dance on flesh-less bones. Soon the wisps that had appeared as white plumes of smoke began to writhe in the throes of death and agony, phantasms of their former selves still stuck t the tune of their life's song. And amongst is all was all of the scarlet of the roses and their petals drifting whimsically on a breeze that was anything but earthly.
